On Summer Vacation

We are currently on summer vacation, welcoming our newest addition to the Little Pink Pansy family (born in early July). We'll be back up and running very soon so check back frequently. Celebrate Mama event in Bethesda, MD

Tomorrow is the Celebrate Mama event in Bethesda, MD. This is a great event for "mamas of all ages and stages"! Vendors have something for everyone and there are children's performances like Rocknocerous, a ballet performance, storytelling, belly dancing, and more!

Last year, Little Pink Pansy was a vendor and had a great turnout. Unfortunately we weren't able to do it this year but we will probably be attending. It's a lot of fun and a great chance to support some other local businesses.

As you know, Pixie Bows is one of our vendors. They have just revamped their line and their website and are getting all sorts of great press. Little Pink Pansy has already placed a large order with them and am waiting on the images so we can add them to our site. They just received a great review at Peanut Butter and Pickle so thought we'd share with you! If you see something you like at the Pixie Bows site, please let us know and we will get it for you! I'm really excited about their new line, with lots of new funky clips besides just pretty bows. Searching for a new web designer

I am in the process of searching for a new web designer for our main site - www.littlepinkpansy.com. I would love to update it and make it more user-friendly and a little more eye-catching. I would also like to improve the ordering for stationery and invitations so I can expand this line. I know several good designers but since the focus of my business is to support women-run companies, especially mom-run ones, I am looking for a woman with a woman's eye to do it. I am looking for new ideas and possibly a new host to help make things simple to upload and change. Little Pink Pansy is pleased with such a booming holiday season. We were very fortunate in this tough economy to do pretty well during the holidays.

There's lots to come in 2009. We are going to be totally revamping the site and adding lots of new products. Unfortunately, we will also be saying goodbye to lots of items too, especially in our children's line due to new federal regulations that will put many of our vendors out of business. So look for some great clearance sales on kids stuff coming in January.

You may know this by now but October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Most of us know at least one woman who has battled breast cancer. In my case, it is my aunt and my mother-in-law. Something like this is never easy but the more that we are aware and take proactive steps for our health, we can drastically improve our chances of finding and treating the cancer early.

In most stores you will find lots of extra pink stuff this month. Spend a few extra dollars on some of it and know that your money is going to help find a cure. We also have some soap at little pink pansy that helps benefit breast cancer research, along with notecards, notepads, contact cards, square labels, and round labels. (Please note that the links to the stationery items take you to page 4 of the respective collections - more pink ribbon items can be found on pages 5 too).

Another simple cost-free method of helping this cause is to visit http://www.thebreastcancersite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=2. All you have to do here is click on the button to give away free mammograms to women who cannot afford them. It couldn't be easier. This month, their sponsor is giving away extra mammograms if they get enough clicks, so now is the time to do it. It's the easiest way to help.

Other ideas would be getting involved for some of the various walks. There is the Avon Walk in several cities (spread throughout the year). Some of the locations include New York, Charlotte, Houston, Washington, D.C., Boston, Chicago, Rocky Mountains, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. This is a 2-day, 39 mile walk. What a fantastic way to reflect on things while also getting exercise and supporting a great cause.

If you're not quite up for such a long walk, another fantastic option is the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. These events take place all over the country and the National event is located in Washington, D.C. You can find a race near you throughout the year.

If nothing else, take this month to do a self-exam and get in the routine of doing it. The best time to do it is in the week following your menstrual cycle when the breast tissue tends to be less tender and lumpy. It's not something that anyone really wants to talk about, but we need to keep ourselves healthy and this is a minor inconvenience that can really make a difference. Do it for yourself, your family, your friends, and for the women who no longer have that option.

She gives you recommendations for keeping yourself looking and feeling your best, even when you are exhausted from the day-to-day grind of life with kids. She shows you at-home tips in case you don't have time or money to go to the spa or gym. It also includes a few simple recipes for quick mid-week dinners for the whole family. She includes tips from experts in all these fields but since beauty and fashion are her background, these chapters are a bit more in-depth. I think this is a guide that helped me remember that I deserve to look and feel my best too and this will be one that I will look at many times in the future to remember her skincare tips or quick and easy exercises.

Pixie Bows Blog

Two of my favorite people in the world are also some of my best suppliers. They make the most adorable hair bows and accessories. They have been in business for several years, working side-by-side making bows and attending craft shows. However, a little over a year ago, Sharon relocated from Georgia to California and they decided to dissolve the business. Sharon continued making bows and other great items such as tutus while Holly became a mommy again to a darling little boy. But it seemed that the universe was pulling them back into business together so they have rejoined forces and made it a bi-coastal venture. Since they will no longer be able to easily attend events together, they are creating a wonderful new website with some standard designs for hair bows, flower clips, and other great hair accessories. I can't wait for this site to be launched ~ target date is October. In the meantime, they have set up a great new blog to discuss their business progress. I still have lots of bows left over from their previous collections and they can be found here. Just as soon as their new collection is complete, I assure you that they will be up on the Little Pink Pansy site. Their bows are probably our biggest seller - they're a huge hit and almost all customers are repeat customers. So browse at what we have now and be on the lookout for what's to come in the future. Are your kids messy eaters, painters, etc.?

My daughter is the queen of un-clean.

Spaghetti is spread all over the face, hands, shirt, shorts, and anywhere else it can go. That's why I started using these fantastic coveralls. They snap on easily over clothes and can be fastened to wear either with individual legs or as a smock. She wears it every time she eats something messy. But we also use it for arts and crafts. This was a god-send when we were dyeing Easter eggs and when we painted mugs for the grandmas for Mother's Day. If only the floor in my house had fared as well as her clothes... They are also easy to clean - just wipe with a wet cloth for a small mess - toss it in the washing machine for a big mess. Celebrate Mama!

Celebrate Mama! is an event founded by a mama in Silver Spring, MD that "celebrates mamas of all ages and stages". This has become a national event with several locations. Many of the celebrations are held this Saturday, May 3rd. Others are being held throughout the summer and fall (check the website for an event near you).

Events are being held in the following locations this weekend:

Vienna, VA
Monterey, CA
Huntsville, AL
Valley Forge, PA
Powell, OH (Sat., May 10th)

I really have no patience and tolerance for unreliable business. If you say you're going to do something, do it. If you say you're going to be somewhere, be there. If you say something will start at 9:00, it should start at 9:00. I don't really think that's too much to ask, is it?

With me, what you see is what you get. I will do what I tell you I'm going to do. I will honor any promises I have made and see things through to the end. I honestly don't know how any businesses survive without these principles.

Money-saving tip

With the economy in the current state of uncertainty, I think most people are trying to watch their spending and looking for ways to save a few bucks here and there. If you haven't thought of it before (or just never knew much about it), I would recommend looking into a warehouse membership. These places usually have some great savings on items that you buy frequently anyways. May not be the place for you if you're single and don't have a lot of room but for a couple or a family, it's a really great investment. Most memberships run about $40-$50/year (may depend on location) but give you access to mega savings. You can buy everything from toothpaste to diapers to fresh fruit to books to furniture to big screen TVs to clothes to tires etc. etc. Many of them also offer gas stations - a major bonus these days as the cost of gas keeps rising. This list is not exhaustive but here are some of the big ones that I'm familiar with - check them out to see what's in your area (and if you have any others to list, please comment on this post).

The Body of a Mother

Since becoming a parent, my body has changed in so many ways. I'm not just talking about the little extra pooch that I can't seem to get rid of - I'm talking about many other things that I think all mothers experience in some way or another, regardless of how you "became" a parent. I wonder if these are familiar to you...

Mind - always racing, always planning ahead and triple checking to make sure I packed enough diapers, snacks, toys, etc. and where is the nearest bathroom, the quickest escape route in case of baby or toddler meltdown

Hair - a little overgrown with un-dyed roots because scheduling a hair appointment requires arranging for childcare

Eyes - droopy and exhausted from the lack of sleep and mid-night awakenings and very early mornings

Ears - going a little deaf from all the screams

Mouth - a little puffy from all the baby kisses

Arms - getting surprisingly buff from carrying kids around all the time

Back - a little achy from carrying kids around all the time

Stomach - alternately very empty (from not having time to eat)v to very full (from eating all the kids' leftovers)

Legs - also getting a little more toned from all the climbing up and down two flights of stairs with kids in your arms

And not to forget the most important one:

Heart - more full of love and happiness than you can ever imagine

Believe it or not, they were made from beavers and horses. EWWWWW.

Strides for Success - We did it!

We did it! We ran the 1K race this morning. I've gotta say though, it really was pathetically short. I had no idea it was quite so quick! It's actually good it wasn't much longer because it was pretty chilly and let's be honest here - I'm a fair-weather runner. Most of the people were kids running or families walking, but it was fun and we had a good time and supported a great cause. Always makes you feel good to do something for someone else...we should all do it more often.

Tomorrow I am running in the Junior League of Northern Virginia's Strides for Success race. I will be doing the 1K because hubby is out of town and the 5K doesn't allow strollers (what a great excuse to do the easy one!) I am excited to participate in this event. I am a member of the Junior League and very proud of the mission. Hybrid Mom magazine has become a staple in my house. I pick up free copies at our local Gymboree play and music center and it has such great articles about motherhood, working, and lifestyle. I believe it was created to address working moms but it really is a great and inspirational magazine for every mom. The articles are fun, light-hearted, and non-judgmental. It doesn't make you feel inadequate, like you're not doing everything "by the book" (like some other parenting mags do). They now also have a website, with lots of great info.
